summer magic.
Summertime is just around the corner and the thought of it has gotten me into a Hayley Mills mood these days! Although I rarely need a reason to get into a Hayley mood, as I call it! There are a few of her movies I always go to when I want a "feel good" fix and "Summer Magic" is one of them. Perhaps this would be categorized as being a children's film, but I'm an adult and I still enjoy watching it, even though I'm nearly twenty-eight (next month)! I suppose I'm somewhat like my mom, who loved taking her little sister to the movies because it gave her the chance to see a children's flick!
I grew up watching a lot of the old Disney films and I soon became obsessed with anything that had to do with Hayley Mills. She's the type of girl I could usually relate to. She wasn't plain, but she wasn't what you might call "glamorous" either. And I've never been a "glamorous" type of girl, as much as I wanted to be! Hayley is pretty and fun and she has a little bit of tomboy in her, which I kind of like. Since I grew up with five brothers and one sister, I think it was hard to be a girly girl growing up, so I tended to not venture too far in the beauty department. Anyway, all that said, Hayley Mills is someone I think a lot of us girls growing up could relate to. If you love her as much as I do, I hope you will go find this movie and watch it, if you haven't already! Even if you have to go to the children's section of the video store (or library) to get it!
P.S. Here's a clip of one of my favorite scenes from Summer Magic.

while I was reading your post I could see so much of myself in it! I love keeping these small pleasures of my childhood too, just like rewatching a good old Disney movie! Plus, if it's from the sixties and starring Hayley, isn't it the best?? I am going to watch Summer magic tonight. Thank you for the suggestion, sending you a big hug!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment, Cathy! Anything from the '60s with Hayley is the best! She's just so fun and every time I watch her I want to be her! Plus this film has some really fun tunes. I found out you can get the soundtrack for this (as well as Parent Trap) on iTunes. I believe they are originally from the vinyl that was released at the time. Also found "That Darn Cat" soundtrack on amazon for mp3 download. Can you tell I'm obsessed?! And thank you for the hug, Cathy! xoxo
ReplyDeleteI love this movie, and I watch it when I am sad. The Sherman Brothers wrote the songs and in their documentery the oldest brother said, On The Front Porch With You, was his favorite song.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check out this movie! I always loved the adventure in "In Search of the Castaways" but my favorite is "The Moon-Spinners." Such good outfits, too!
ReplyDeleteIf you like The Moon Spinners, I am sure you will love this movie! It's so cute. I just adore Moon Spinners and all of her clothing too! In fact, I am working on drafting a pattern for the green dress Hayley wears towards the end of the film. If it turns out, I'll do a blog post about it.
ReplyDeleteI just mentioned this movie to a friend this morning when she said her dream house was yellow with a big wraparound porch. She's never seen the movie so I googled for a still of it and absolutely love your post! I too love watching Hayley Mills when I need a happy summery fix. They aern't children movies, but family ones! Though only one of my kids is watching with me now. BTW - this is my 28th year too!
ReplyDeleteThank you for commenting on my blog, Abigail! It's nice to know I am not the only one who is an adult and still loves this movie! I am a sucker for old "feel good" flicks, that's for sure! And I just love the "the yellow house in Beulah." I wouldn't mind at all if I lived in it! :)
